Wash your clothes less often.
If you wore a shirt for a few hours and it’s not dirty, don’t automatically toss it in the dirty laundry.
If your kids go through 3 or 4 changes of a clothes a day…curb that habit. I know kids who put on an outfit, wear it for an hour and t hen put in laundry and go put on another outfit. That’s just wasteful. Wasteful of water, energy.
Line dry your clothes when possible. I know weather and other elements may not allow you to do so but if you’re able to..then do it!
If you can’t line dry outside, consider buying a drying rack for indoor use.
Insulating your home’s hot water pipes is one of the easiest and most cost effective measures you can do.
Savings will depend on heating fuel (see below), but in all cases the payback is well within one year.
Annual Savings (Oil Heat @ $1.10/gallon)
Annual Savings (Natural Gas @ $0.75/therm)
Annual Savings (Electricity $0.10/kWh
Tube pipe insulation may be used on domestic cold and hot water pipes. Pipe insulation will help to reduce heat loss by up to 80 percent through hot water pipes and will stop sweating on cold water pipes. Pipe insulation can also help reduce plumbing noise. It is pre-slit for easy installation (simply snapping onto the pipe), and may be trimmed with a utility knife. One package includes four 36 inch long pieces.
Instead of leaving the kitchen stove overhead light on or a regular nightlight in the bathroom or hall, consider getting some automatic LED nightlights. You’ll save money and energy doing so.
You can get yours here for just $5.00 (which is about the same as what you’d pay for a standard nightlight)
It automatically comes on when it’s dark, goes off when it’s light.
