Green Gift Wrap

Posted by admin on May 20, 2009

Everyone has to give gifts at some point in time…wrap yours environmentally friendly.

You can “wrap” gifts in a reusable bag, newspaper adorned with flowers or herbs in lieu of ribbon.

Most regular gift wrap is expensive and lasts but a few mere minutes before the recipient of your gift rips it into shreds and off to landfill it goes.

If you’re going to give gifts that you insist on wrapping, consider using tree friendly, eco friendly gift wrap if you don’t want to make your own. You can find some that is made with non toxic dye and shredded tree bark, or other tree friendly products.

Green Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is this Sunday.
This year forego giving the mainstream gifts and opt for either homemade gifts from items you already have at home, or do something rather than buying something.

Use ecards rather than store bought cards. You can send some great cards from Care2.com. By sending ecards from Care2.com you’re making a difference by generating donations to a variety of organizations as well as the green factor of sending ecards rather than store bought ones.

Plant flowers or garden with your mother. It’s better than buying cut flowers that will ultimately die. Planting living flowers and plants is a lifelong gift and you can bond, enjoy each other while you’re doing this.

Give a green gift bag there are many green gift bags to choose from.

Go for a walk with your mom. Spend some time, walking, talking, bonding…simply enjoying.

Buy organic, fair trade or natural products for mom this year.

Cook mom a meal at home from locally grown foods rather than take her out.

No matter what you end up doing…ENJOY!

Use natural gift wrap

Posted by admin on April 29, 2009

Do you know how gift wrap paper is made?
Probably not.
It begins with paper that is produced in mills from wood pulp. Mainstream gift paper is made with about 55% from virgin wood pulp. Then the pulp is bleached and then the design is made with ink and synthetic dyes. About 2 to 3 1/2 tons of trees are used to make a ton of paper…that’s a lot of waste. The paper making process requires enormous amounts of energy, water (anywhere from 44,000 to 83,000 liters of water per ton of paper), and chemicals. Paper making process also creates significant water & air pollution as well as huge amount of solid waste. All of which is not good for the environment.

Instead, try nature non toxic gift wrap if you’re going to wrap presents.
You want to use gift wrap and note cards that are made with non toxic dyes, natural inks and bark shredding so the tree itself isn’t killed or harmed. There are also note cards and paper that are made with renewable natural sources as well.

You can also try your hand at making paper. Read the how to article here.

Green Easter

Tomorrow’s Easter and with that people are coloring eggs, buying their kids bunnies & chicks for gifts, preparing to eat chocolate.

Bunnies & Chicks:
First and foremost I strongly suggest not buying a bunny or a chick for a gift unless you’re totally prepared for the responsibility of taking care of the little guy. My daughter has a rabbit she got in December but it wasn’t an impulse, and she takes care of her pets and is prepared for the responsibility. Sadly, many others aren’t and then these innocent creatures are left to die, be neglected (younger kids aren’t usually ready to handle delicate small animals) or shipped off to shelters. So unless you’re totally prepared for the care of these pets, bypass giving them as gifts.

Coloring Eggs
When purchasing your eggs, get organic or free range.
